Maxine Schiff in Tush Magazine #4.

I love the oversized rings and bangles in this editorial. House of Harlow 1960, Nicole Richie's new jewelry line, does "plate rings" for pretty much a steal, but sadly, I'm not in the USA.

Miss Schiff is one of my favourite newcomers, by the way. Unfortunately, last season wasn't that great for her when it comes to runway shows, but she booked two amazing campaigns - Vivienne Westwood and Sisley (perfection, even with red hair, especially the Underwear ads).

Ich liebe die überdimensionierten Ringe und Armreifen in dieser Fotostrecke. Bei House of Harlow 1960, Nicole Richies neuer Schmucklinie, gibt es solche "Tellerringe" für einen relativ kleinen Preis, aber leider befinde ich mit nicht in den USA.

Miss Schiff ist übrigens eine meine Lieblings-Newcomerinnen. Leider war die letzte Saison nicht so berauschend für sie was Schauen angeht, aber dafür hat sie zwei großartige Kampagnen - Vivienne Westwood und Sisley (Perfektion, sogar mit rotem Haar, besonders in den Wäsche-Anzeigen).

Apparently, I'm in the minority, but the Jean Paul Gaultier F/W 07.08 campaign is one of my favourite campaigns ever. I love Gemma's delicate features and light hair with the jewel shades, I love the feathers, the Maori paint, the masks, the plaid, the plain background - just about everything.

Anscheinend bin ich in der Minderheit, aber die Jean Paul Gaultier Kampagne ist eine meine Lieblingskampagnen überhaupt. Ich liebe den Kontrast von Gemmas feinen Gesichtszügen und hellem Haar mit den Edelsteintönen, ich liebe die Federn, die Maori-Bemalung, die Masken, die Karos, den simplen Hintergrund - einfach so gut wie alles.

Cuffed

I recently got into jewellery making again and came up with the idea of creating metal cuffs myself. I didn't think it was going to work out or look decent when I started with my first one, but I'm actually quite satisfied with the result.

I decided on engraving words of inspiration and apparently, as I realized in the midths of the process, I still had quite a bit more space left than I originally planned, there are some duplicates as well as some rather ... useless words.
For my next cuffs, I used quotes and lines from songs I liked.

If anyone is interested, I'll definitely post a tutorial on how to do these cuffs soon.

Experimenting with my black lace dress I got yesterday... Yes, it's by H&M yet again. I must seem to you as if that was the only place I ever shopped at. This isn't true at all, though, I swear!
Anyway, I was inspired by a complete Chloé outfit Kate Bosworth wore to the Letterman show some time ago. I wish my leggings (yes, I named it) were as beautifully embellished as hers!

Also, this is a premiere of sorts! It's the first time I didn't use the self-timer to take my photos but had them taken by my dad.

If there was one person I'd like to trade lives with, it would be Vanessa Traina. Always hanging with my favourite celebrities (the Olsens, Nicole Richie, Kiki Dunst etc.) and other illustrous people, going to fancy parties in NYC, pre-ordering from designer collections ... on top of being drop-dead gorgeous, smart and having a killer body. Killer combination. And did you know the Traina sisters supposedly had Hermès Birkins for school bags?

Model of the Month: Anna Selezneva

Having scored a whopping four campaigns for F/W 08.09 (that's more than fellow Russian Vlada Roslyakova got!), I reckoned it was about time I featured Anna Selezneva on here. Besides the very obvious, that is - a perfectly proportioned face, chiseled cheekbones, poise and grace in editorials and a fierce strut.

She's placed with Silent in Paris, but still on the market in both NYC and Milan. I could easily picture her getting signed to a big agency (hey, Women!), though, and sweeping up at the S/S 09 shows come next month.

Looking into the mirror this morning, the first thing I noticed was my hair frizzing and stubbornly straying into directions I wasn't fond of. Examining myself further, I discovered some blackheads I couldn't remember having been there the day before and the never fading dark circles under my eyes seemed even more apparent than usual. I looked rough and not very glamourous at all. No need to panic, I thought calmingly, some straightening balm here and cooling pads there and this won't all that bad.
But after having taken care of those little problems, I still felt somewhat uncomfortable and found new flaws to pick at. Getting dressed, the tiny bit of fat around my hips and stomach seemed immense all of the sudden and my butt seemed to be extra prominent while my boobs couldn't jut beyond my potbelly.
My wardrobe didn't seem to bear the right clothes or rather covers to conceal my flawed parts, either, and so I felt even more uncomfortable and frustrated with myself than before.

Ugly days, fat days, uncomfortable days, days when all you want to do is burry yourself under a pile of cushions and blankets and let nobody see you - who doesn't get them every once in a while? Women who are usually very confident and thought their body wasn't all that bad one day get completely discontent with their looks the next day. Even stunning Kate Beckinsale has admitted to feeling so ugly on some days that she won't even leave her house.
But what is it that gets us so down and changes the views on our bodies so drastically? One thing is for sure: it is not actually our bodies that change, but our minds.

I have always held a certain fascination for vampires, even before my luckily very short goth phase (onto which I look back shamefully, errr..) , as well as being enthusiastic reader of the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer (who else can't wait for the movie?) and considering Interview with the Vampire to be one of my favourite books and movies. There is just something so elegant, sophisticated and mesmerizing about vampires as I imagine them and I have to admit that as I read IwtV I wished I was one of them not only one time.
Now, being a fashion lover as well, the question what vampires would wear today only comes naturally.

One show I always absolutely love the make-up at is Gucci. Dark eyes, nude lips and matte skin - it seems not only I have a thing for this look, but also Frida. While in her first two collections for Gucci the main focus was on the lips, it's now all about bold eye make-up.

Only two more days to vote in the Designer Combat Part I!

I've never been too big on make-up. I own lots, yes, but I'm not exactly a pro when it comes to applying it. For daytime, I usually mostly wear the same look everyday, portrayed pretty well in the picture of lovely Anja Rubik above. For going out, I like to use a bit more than just a hint of colour - dark eyes and nude lips are a favourite of mine, as well as lots of eyeliner or metallic shades. This is pretty much all I can do.

Three basic staples or "holy grails" that I couldn't live without are:

1 ) Mascara - Being a pale blonde, I have fine, not very visible lashes, hence mascara is a must. I've tried a whole lot of different ones with my absolute favourite being Chanel Inimitable, but since I'm on a budget I've currently settled on Rimmel Lash Maxxx which is almost just as good for a fraction of the Chanel price.

2) Concealer - The key to not looking like a crystal meth addict in the mornings. I have terrible undereye circles and am prone to getting a few impurities here and there and concealer is a lifesaver in this area. My absolute favourite is Ultra Smooth Liquid Concealer by The Body Shop.

3) Lipgloss - I've never been a lipstick girl, but I own a gazillion lipglosses in almost every shade there is, but with pale pink or peach tones being the great part of my collection. I always carry one with me at any time (not so hard since there's one in about every bag I own). It's hard picking a very favourite one, but I'd say I like Benefit Her Glossiness a tiny bit better than my other glosses.

Model of the Month: Gracie Carvalho

This month I had a rather hard time choosing between Regina Feoktistova, the improved version of Jeisa Chiminazzo, and Gracie Carvalho, one of the most stunning newcomers, but I eventually decided on Gracie.

The 17-year old Brazilian walked in 35 out of 39 womenswear shows at Rio Fashion Week and booked another 33 shows in São Paulo. With her refined look that is a mix of Emanuela de Paula and Liya Kebede to me, her flawless skin and utter grace, she has quickly become one of my favourite new models.

Gracie definitely has big things on the horizon. In addition to being represented by Way Model Management, she recently signed to Marilyn Models and is now on her way to New York. I bet we'll be seeing her in quite a few shows come September. Also have an eye out for her L'Officiel Brazil July 2008 cover with Claudia Seiler.

I just love everything about the sea - the fresh breeze, the smell of salty, the seagulls, the sound of crashing waves, the sand between my toes, the sparkles on the water that make it look like a thousand pebbles, the glow my skin and hair get when I lay on the beach.

I could name seven songs that I absolutely love just from this band, but I pinned it down to just this one. It's one of The Kills' sadder songs, both lyrics (breaking up with someone) and melody wise.

I know some people don't like Maroon 5, because apparently they've become too "mainstream", but they're still one of my favourite bands and it feels great listening to them.

I'd occasionally listened to her music before, but recently after the realease of "X" I became a big fan of Kylie's. Whenever I hear her songs, I just want to sing along and move.

One of the saddest but best songs I've ever heard. Gets me everytime.

Jolie-laide vs. conventionally beautiful

The term "jolie-laide" (pretty-ugly in English) describes a woman who would not be considered beautiful in the common sense, but who is still oddly attractive. It does not refer to ugliness per se, but rather highlights the odd, flawed beauty. (Tip: This term is also great to casually drop in conversations.)

Back in the day when supermodels still existed and Christy and Claudia graced the covers of Vogue etc., models were everything but odd. They portrayed perfect people whose beauty was greatly appreaciated by the masses.
Today, it seems like odd or even ugly is the new beautiful as a great number of models could be labeled with the term "jolie-laide". In fact, it would be a lot easier to name those who would not be considered odd than those who would be. But after all, everything has to change once in a while and using the unconventional, as opposed to the uber-gorgeous, is just another way to achieve the exclusivity high fashion is always longing for.

To illustrate the difference between "jolia-laide" and "beautiful", I picked out some models that I personally consider to fall under the two categories.

I have never heard of Hobo magazine, to be honest, but anyone who can de-creep Christina Ricci deserves my attention. I usually think Christina looks odd or even scary to some extent, possibly due to her former roles (although I have to say I hold a certain fascination for Wednesday Addams and her cold stare), but Hobo magazine managed to actually make her look beautiful and delicate.

London Calling

Here I am again - incredibly tired and exhausted, but also quite content and full of new impressions. It is always refreshing to breathe the air of a big, busy city and dive into the anonimity of a place with more 7 mio. people.

Radcliffe Camera; The Bodleian Library (Oxford)

Oxford wasn't nearly as exciting as London, but still I quite enjoyed it. Even though the local High Street is small, shopping there is splendid, calm and nowhere near as exhausting as in London (hello 50m queues in front of the changing rooms in Oxford Street Primark). Studying there must be so great (or well, not so much studying, but being distracted from studying by all the exciting things to do and places to meet people)!

Next to all the visiting museums and castles and guided tours, I also got to shop quite a bit (I would have been quite devastated if I hadn't). I'm completely convinced that every other country has better stores than Germany. You have no idea what I would give to have some of the shops here in Germany that people in the UK and and USA get to go to.
Anyway, I paid visits to Primark which is to some extent the British equivalent to Forever 21, at least in terms of prices (although Primark might be a tad bit cheaper even), New Look (only good for shoes and when they have a sale), Urban Outfitters on Oxford Street (quite disappointing, if you ask me) and of coure I went to Camden Town where I had a creepy encounter with some Goth chick.

Hiatus

Tomorrow morning at 7 am, I'm going on a class trip to Oxford. We'll also be visiting London (yaaay!) and Stratford-upon-Avon (not so yay, but anyway... haven't been there yet). I can't even express how utterly excited I am! I'm practically bouncing! This is going to be so incredibly fun!

Shipwrecked

When I saw these shots from the editorial "Naufragée" (French for "shipwrecked"), published in the new issue of Numéro, I immediately had to think of the movie "Pirates of the Caribbean". Bootstrap Bill Turner, Will's father, is known for being covered in various marine creatures (seafood, ahem) and this is also a great part of the styling in the editorial. Another idea from the film found in the editorial is the scarf wrapped around Bill's head, or just ribbons as on Carmen.
So, did the stylist get inspired by the movie or is this just a coincidence?

Model of the Month: Skye Stracke

With her large blue eyes, porcelain skin and full lips, 17-year old Skye Stracke reminds me of a doll and could be Tanya Dziahileva's little sister. The ironic thing to this comparison, though, is the fact that Skye is actually older than Tanya.

Skye was born in Perth, Australia and just recently moved to New York City to further push her career. It started when she won a Vivien's model competition and did Rosemount Australian Fashion Week where she was discovered by a model scout from DNA.

Since then, she walked in 29 shows last season and shot editorials for numerous magazines. The only thing missing in her book now is to become the face of a campaign.

Mit ihrem riesigen blauen Augen, dem Porzellanteint und den vollen Lippen, erinnert mich die 17-jährgie Skye Stracke an eine Puppe und könnte zudem Tanya Dziahilevas kleine Schwester sein. Die Ironie an diesem Vergleich liegt jedoch darin, dass Skye eigentlich älter als Tanya ist.

It's such a rush

What we see of a fashion show is mostly just the runway side. Models calmly strutting down the catwalk, serious faces and perfect presentation, but backstage is a whole different story. Between walks, everything has to be extremely fast as there is often not more than a minute for the models to change their outfits and get back on the runway. Thus, it is not unlikely to see a picture of a model running in the backstage files of e.g. style.com or any other website that offers runway shots.

I love how is in the almost exact same pose in both pictures. She actually reminds me of a cavewoman or something in the first one!

Look at Stam pushing the other model away! This is like "The Fast And The Furious". :D

"They fled into that direction, Commander Pluto!" The first photo just cracks me up everytime I see it.

Iselin's and Inguna's expression are seriously priceless. I don't think anyone could look as cute running as Inguna does.

Almost Famous

Last saturday I rewatched Almost Famous and it reminded me why I had fallen in love with this movie back in 2005 when I watched it for the first time. The plot - a teenager boy aspiring to be a rock'n'roll journalist tours around America with the fictional band Stillwater and his efforts to get an interview with the band for Rolling Stone magazine, the characters, the whole 70s spirit (I wish I had lived during that time) and especially the fashion.

The film's most memorable character, Penny Lane (played by Kate Hudson), the leader of the "Band-Aides", is one of my personal style icons. She has the typical 70s carefree style with flowing tunics, ethno elements, converse and John Lennon glasses.

I know a lot of people are sick of the hippie look, but personally, I still absolutely love it and probably always will. There is just something about it that draws me in like hardly anything else does.

Gwyneth got the groove

I don't know if it's the new hairdo, or her rocking body (all those work-outs with her pal Madonna are paying off!), or a new stylist (cough), but Gwyneth Paltrow has been looking exceptionally amazing lately.

With her new movie Iron Man coming out, we are also being pampered with lots of premiere pictures as well as candids (she seems to be getting quite a lot of attention from the paparazzi these days), so maybe that is why I've been noticing her more than usual.

This is the wonderful and fresh Gwyneth from Shakespeare In Love, Emma and The Royal Tenenbaums that I once loved so much!

Style Icon: Byrdie Bell

Byrdie Bell is not your typical NYC socialite. At first view, she may fulfil all the criteria (Presentable exterior? Check. Long line of ancestors? Check. Famous parents? Check.), but there is one important difference: she actually possesses her own significant and fabulous style.

Would you have guessed the grey dress in the first picture of the bottom line was H&M? Probably not, since Byrdie knows how to make any piece look like it cost a fortune, cleverly pairing it with the chicest accessories. Another thing I love about her style is how, unlike other celebrities and socialites, she recycles her clothes, such as the quintessential Rick Owens jacket she likes to throw over ladylike body-hugging dresses or her Dior Plissé clutch.

With a strong resemblance to Elle McPherson and an acting career ahead, Byrdie is definitely one of the brightest and freshest socialites out there right now.

Yesterday we paid a visit to IKEA with the intention to buy not more than magazine holders and CD boxes, but ended up with several pillows, blankets, glass objects, plates and other decor and without CD boxes. Not that we really needed any of those things listed above, but they were just too lovely/useful to pass.

The pillows and blanket are part of the new Ofelia collection, a series of white textiles with extraordinary structures designed by Camilla Diedrich.

Her creations remind me of the sea, light shores and foamy waves. They exude a calmness that is so fitting for my rather restless and scratch room.

The first piece I bought is this longish, velvet-y pillow that looks great on my red sofa. I initially thought the pattern was that of a zebra, but now that I think about it more, it could also be the lines that waves draw into the sand or the structure of bark.

The second one is this gorgeous and cozy blanket - I don't mind the fact that it's almost only acrylic and makes my hair fly, because it is so soft and warm and feels amazing.

I really do have a soft spot for interior decor.

This video for the Charlotte Ronson Spring 2008 collection has the exact same effect on me as the promo video for The Row: I'm pressing the play button over and over again, I'm under a spell, I practically want to live in that perfect little world. The completely adorable Annabelle Dexter-Jones, Charlotte, Samantha and Mark's little sister, is contributing her part to my tiny addiction, too, as well as Carla Bruni's sweet voice singing about that thing called amour (let's neglect the fact that she's actually singing it's not for her).

Model of the Month: Georgina Stojiljkovic

Georgina Stojiljkovic (who's pre-westernized name is actually Djurdja) is one of the top models this season, having walked in a smashing 62 shows. The 20-year old Serbian is placed with Women Paris and NY, Names Milan and FM London and definitely has more to offer than just striking beauty.

Besides the obvious - pillowly, heart-shaped lips the world has never seen before, sharp cheekbones, luminous blue-green cat's eyes, flawless porcelain skin, shiny hair and a stride like a pro (got enough already?) - she also possesses brains. She studies political science with an average grade 9 (which is excellent as I was informed), took part in more than ten seminars about nonviolent communication and environmentalism and is fluent in English and French. Before becoming a model, she finished high school with excellent grades. It's great to see a model with priorities!

Although I keep misspelling her last name, I am already dreading the day that May begins and I'll have to replace her with a new MOTM. I have definitely found a new favourite here!

Venetian ball or horror movie?

These pictures of Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen attending their event stylist Estee Stanley's wedding yesterday in LA have to be the creepiest and and the same time most inspirational thing I have seen all week. I am not sure what exactly the purpose of these masks is, be it to cover the faces from paparazzi or to have bring some Venice to LA, but if Estee intended to have a unique wedding she certainly succeeded. I also like the colour coordination for the dresses. Not only does Estee wear, from what I can see, a beautiful gown, but the attendants' black dresses are a nice contrast. It really seems black is the new colour for bridesmaid dresses, as demonstrated at the wedding Kate Bosworth attended last month.

Hello again

France was utterly amazing, as always. Although the strong mistral was quite a pain in the butt for the first two days, the weather was brilliant and sunny - perfect ballet flats weather as I like to call it. To my great delight, we didn't only visit Aix-en-Provence, but also Marseille, which is about 1 1/2 hours south from where we stayed. If I had to choose the cities I'd most love to live in, this one would definitely on it next to London, New York and Paris.

The day after my return from France, though, I got sick with a cold (the same one my mother had been battling with the week before) and have been ever since. Despite all efforts in the shape of nasty cough syrup and drops, lots of sleep and ridiculous amounts of liquids I have to stomach, my voice hasn't returned yet. Therefore, please excuse my long absence.

Now, for the fashion part of this. I am a huge magazine addict - there is just something about those glossy pages and prints that I adore - and in my opinion, it doesn't really get any better than French magazines. This is why I splurged on my three very favourite magazines - Vogue, Jalouse and Numéro. The latter doesn't really provide any useful information, but the editorials are just magnificient and that alone is worth the money.

With both Jalouse and Vogue came a small Levi's catalogue containing the most inspiring looks. The first outfit above is, although so simple, something I really love and need to try soon. Slim darkblue jeans, a stripe shirt, a blue blazer and brown brogues doesn't sound so exciting, but the way they are put together on the model makes it look spectacular. Or maybe it's just the gorgeous model that makes the look here.
Outfit number two successfully demonstrates how to make light denim look good. Need I say any more?

When accompanying my mother to watching her friend's daughter's tennis match today, I came to think about how fashionable everyone looked even in sportswear and regret that I hadn't put any effort into my dressing for working out before, even though I'm such a fashion addict. When I exercise, it's usually some ratty old sweat pants, a top I've worn approximately 87 times before and old Adidas trainers. My hair is always in a messy bun or sweeped back with a bandeau. Not exactly a very presentable look.

One of the loveliest sportswear collections ever designed has to be Stella McCartney's line for Adidas. There is such a feminity about every piece from the collection that is not present elsewhere while her designs are still functional and not too expensive.

For basic, inexpensive and slightly retro-inspired sportswear there is the obvious American Apparel. Be it fleece or mesh, for yoga or running, leggings or tanks - they have it all.

The most obtainable to me is H&M. Their styles are similar to those of Adidas and the like, they have proved me as being rather durable (as apposed to the general opinion about the quality of H&M clothing) and are quite cheap.

Smells like teen spirit

I figured I posted too little about beauty, skincare, make-up and all that jazz and with the warmer seasons coming up again, it is definitely time for a small something about my favourite fragrances. Apart from freshly cut grass (which apparently smells similar to blood, as I learned today) and LUSH American Cream conditioner, that is.

I am starting off with my favourite and most-used fragrance at the moment - Ck Calvin Klein In 2u for her. It smells citrus-y in the top notes and then melts down to a warm vanilla scent. The fragrance is described as quite sexy and perfect for hooking up (weird, I know), but it just makes me feel really confident when I wear it.

Next on is my second favourite scent to wear Givenchy Very Irrésistible. It basically smells of all different kinds of roses, making me feel very elegant, sophisticated and somehow Audrey Hepburn-esque when I wear it.

Euphoria by Calvin Klein is strictly to be used in winter for me. It is musky and spicy, making it quite sensual and mysterious, but also sometimes a bit too heavy for me. Although in general I am more of a carefree, light fragrances girl, I love the oriental and warm smell of this.

Escada Island Kiss was one of the first fragrances I ever used. It is very, very sweet and fruity - a typical summer perfume. It reminds me of a wonderful holiday in Spain where I met lots of amazing people and had such a great time. I still love to sniff and use this every once in a while, especially in summer.

I really don't know of anyone else who could make this recent season Balmain jacket look any better. Emmanuelle manages to not look trashy in the slightest, but absolutely cool and stunning.

Coco looking precious in Vogue
I used to think Coco with her always open mouth was annoying, but she is growing on me fast. The cover doesn't seem too fitting for Vogue, but I love it anyway. The colours work beautifully and the styling is done quite nicely.

May I introduce you to Giovanna Battaglia, the ultimate proof that you don't have to be French to be absolutely chic? The 28-year old fashion editor at L'UOMO Vogue practically is the definition of fabulous. With her mile-long legs (Surpise! She used to be a model as well.), beautiful face and of course impeccable style, she is one of my biggest inspirations at the moment.

She has a rather classic style, but always adds a twist to her outfits. It definitely helps that her clothes are always the perfect size and fit. Another very admirable quality of Ms. Battaglia is the way she manages to incorporate unexpected items into her wardrobe, e.g. the powder pink Chanel bowler she frequently uses.

She is a Prada exclusive, opened and closed the show in Milan and walked for Miu Miu in Paris. What else could a girl ask for in her first season on top of looking like a younger and softer Angelina Jolie?

She is currently placed with VO in her home country Ukraine and with Women Milan.

I can definitely see her doing big things in the future. As much as I like Sasha, I would love to see Natalia replace her in the Prada campaign. Sasha is beginning to bore me - typical Kate Moss syndrome.

My favourite celebrity style icons amazed me again this week, especially Mary-Kate. Ashley always looks impeccable anyway, but after MK's recent style mishaps, I was quite excited to see her look that amazing again!

Lots of smiley faces at Sonia Rykiel
Sonia Rykiel is always one of my favourite shows presentation wise. The models seems carefree, youthful and as if they were having a great time, as opposed to the severe faces at most other shows. The clothes were not to be sneezed at either - very exciting!

Size counts at Chanel
After the giant tweed jacket at the Haute Couture shows just a few weeks ago, Chanel now surprises us with huge 2.55 flap bags, pefume bottles and ballet flats. I would love to have one of those at home - the ballet flats could serve as a cosy bed.

Ricardo Tisci strikes again
Givenchy hands down was one of my favourite collections this season next to Alexander McQueen and Balmain. I loved absolutely everything about it, beginning with the fierce heels, via the leather pants and ending with the kitschy jewelry. Amazing.

Bypassing the smoking ban

After the unusual poses on the Lagerfeld runway, Hermès presents to us the next extraordinary way of strutting down that catwalk: holding a lit cigarette. Très chic, très français. Sure thing they chose Natasha Poly as their 'smoker' as she is known for emtpying a lot of cigarette boxes.

After all, Jean Paul Gaultier has a long history of having models with cigarettes walk in his 'own' shows:

Ethereal, gorgeous and totally unexpected. There really isn't much more to say about the cover for the March issue of Vogue Italia by Steven Meisel. With it comes a very, very beautiful editorial featuring the lovely Kamila Filipcikova in stunning lady-like clothes that looks like it was taken at the beginning of the 20th century.
Also included in the issue is a stunning editorial by Paolo Roversi whose work I adore. Jackpot, I say!

Anlässlich des Starts der 3. Staffel von Germany's Next Topmodel am Donnerstag (28. Februar), hier ein paar Infos über Rolf Schneider, der von nun an Bruce Darnell ersetzt (traurig aber wahr):

Der Neue an der Seite von Heidi Klum und Peyman Amin ist der 51-jährige Rolf Schneider. Der in Paris lebende gebürtige Kölner ist Casting-Director in seiner eigenen Agentur und realisierte weltweit schon über 2.000 Castings. Auf Vergleiche mit Bruce Darnell reagiert er eher empfindlich, sei er doch ein Original und völlig anders als Bruce. Ah ja. Welche Agentur ihm denn nun unterliegt, war leider nicht herauszubekommen. Allgemein gibt Google nicht allzu viel über ihn her. Bei einem Interview mit ihm gestern auf Pro7 kam er leicht überdreht und "quirky" herüber, also ganz in alter Bruce-Manier. Anscheinend wollten die Macher von GNTM dann doch nicht so hohe Quotenverluste einbüßen müssen.

This was clearly the highlight of the whole fashion week for me - seeing my favourite model Daria on the runway again! Yes, she did look a little bored, but that didn't make her look any less stunning. Fingers crossed for her walking some show in Paris next week.

Angelina Jolie pregnant again
Neglecting the fact that Brad looks like a 70s porn star, I think Angelina looks absolutely beautiful here. The two of them will probably end up having a whole army or at least football team of kids if they keep adopting/giving birth at that rate.

Taking a full breasted blonde, placing her on a bed, spilling kaviar over her boobs and using your statement amateur lighting won't make a good photo, Mr. Teller.

LiLo wearing some colour
Are those really colours we see you wearing there, Ms. Lohan? More than two at that? It seems she is rediscovering some of her old style (wait, it was Rachel Zoe's style) again in baby steps. At least I don't see a sign of leggings mistaken for pants and t-shirts mistaken for dresses here. The only thing she'll have to work on now is losing the fake tan moustache and tons of bronzer on her 'cheekbones'.

Mischa tricking us
Wait, is Mischa Barton finally brunette again? Nope, unfortunately it's just a wig for a new movie she's working on. My heart really skipped a beat when I saw those pictures of her looking more like her old self and less gypsy meets crack whore. Doesn't she look so much better like this?

Melting away

Although the jewelry looks quite beautiful and I can imagine the concept to be rather refreshing in summer, isn't it somewhat pointless to buy jewelry that will melt away within minutes of wearing it? Eccentricity taken a little bit too far or art - you decide.

Like a footballer's wife

This week, Byblos delivered one of my favourite collections of Milan. It reminded me of cotton candy, lollipops, bubblegum and popsicles, little girls with braces and a modern lolita at the same time. Sweet with a bitter aftertaste.
With almost all dresses the models wore knee high athletic socks in either white, grey or blackberry - a mix between Prada F/W 07.08 and Marni S/S 07. I for one think that combination looks effing fabulous!
Let's see how big these will get. Probably not to the means of Prada.

Diese Woche lieferten Byblos eine meiner Lieblingskollektionen in Milan ab. Sie erinnerte mich an Zuckerwatte, Lollies, Kaugummi und Wassereis, kleine Mädchen mit Zahnspangen und eine Art moderne Lolita zugleich. Süß mit einem bitteren Nachgeschmack.
Die Models trugen zu fast allen Kleidern kniehohe Sportsocken in weiß, grau oder brombeer - eine Mischung aus Prada Herbst/Winter 07.08 und Marni Frühling/Sommer 07. Meine Meinung nach eine phantastische Kombination!
Es bleibt abzuwarten, wie die Kniestrümpfe ankommen. Wahrscheinlich nicht ganz so gut, wie die Prada-Version.

To a new beginning

After having had some difficulties with Wordpress at more than one occasion and being fed up with the limited ways of altering the layout of the blog, I decided to move to Blogspot because it is not as restrictive and easier to use. Naturally, I also moved all the previous entries to the new location, but unfortunately your lovely comments got lost in the process.

In addition to the new domain, some other changes have taken place too:

Considering how many of my readers come from Germany (almost 25%), I decided to also write in German in addition to English from now on to give those who aren't as fluent in English the opportunity to follow my blog posts.
The most obvious change probably is the new layout. I haven't decided yet if it will stay that way or if I will find an even better solution (I must admit I already quite like it like this), but this is it for now.
I added a little music player to the sidebar on the right where you can choose from four songs to listen to.

Red, red, red ...

... are all my dresses. Red, red, red is everything I have. That is why I love all things red, because my darling is a rider., as goes the German children's song. This is certainly not the reason for Anouck Lepère wearing her red tights with everything lately since her husband Jefferson Hack is not a horseman but the editor of Dazed & Confused and Another Mag. So why is it that Anouck feels she has to wear them with everything and anything? Does she want to create a new trend? Have a statement accessory? Promote awareness for AIDS? I really don't know.

While I liked, even loved, how she wore the red tights the first time, namely with a floral dress and gladiator sandals, outfit number two was quite a miss in my opinion. By number three it got a tiny bit ridiculous even, although I preferred that variation to the second one. Kudos to Anouck for her guts and consistency, though!

Alexandria "Ally" Hilfiger

The 22-year old daughter of fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger has come a long way since 2003 when she had her own reality show called "Rich Girls" together with her then-best friend Jaime Gleicher. Not only has she been to rehab and tried to organize her personal life, but she has also advanced quite a lot style wise.
Being born in New York city, her style now is a mix of uptown and downtown, featuring a lot of coats over little dresses (really little considering she's only about 5 feet tall), bright colours and, as of late, geeky glasses. With her small frame, dark hair and suntanned skin she resembles Margherita Missoni, Julia Restoin-Roitfeld as well as Julia's mother, fashion goddess Carine Roitfeld, a bit.
Besides being a 'rich' daughter, socialite and heiress, she is currently also working on her own accessory line and as a painter and helping friend Izzy Gold promote his label Bad Ass.

Aiming (not so) high

Forget lego - these woven Balenciaga heels (ankle boots, apparently or according to Browns) definitely win my award for hottest and most drool-worthy shoes of the season. Note the exquisite details, such as metallic pink heels and pink buckle fastenings on the ankles.

Second place are these hot pink Nicholas Kirkwood suede sandals with lizard trimming. For some reason, they appear to be buttery soft and actually quite comfortable to walk in.

The Acne Jeans Birkenstock sandals certainly deserve the award for 'Most horrendous shoes to ever be sold at Browns'. Pair with shorts and either white tennis socks or dirty and unmanicured toes for the worst look ever imaginable.

Fashion Week Highlight of the Day: Etrolicious

Bottega Veneta was nothing groundbreakingly exciting, Blumarine should only be worn inside your house, Salvatore Ferragamo's green fur creations didn't exactly float my boat and the only things I liked at Prada were the bags, but Etro just somehow vaulted me right into fashion heaven!
The collection included hardly a piece that wasn't at least acceptable in my book - in fact, I found myself loving almost every single outfit, beginning with the paisly prints, via the mini skirts and blazers ensembles, ending with the fetish-inspired lace-up boots.

These boots are simply to die for! If I had the money, courage and not to forget legs to wear them, I totally would. Please, please, please, I'm begging for either one of the Olsen twins to wear these this year!

The sharpened version of a lady's suit or just 'schoolgirl that lifted her skirt up 10 cm' meets 'naughty secretary'. Those ice skating skirts are just perfection.
And that giant feather cluth on the left...! Love. (insert enthusiastic emoticon here)

The return of boho

Remember the Golden Age of boho, circa 2005, when every celebrity from Sienna Miller to the Olsen twins to Nicole Richie had the hippie look perfectionated? When flowing skirts, maxi dresses and roomy tunics were the things to wear? When there were no really chic clothes in sight in the shops?
It seems the bohemian style is experiencing a revival for this S/S season (according to Roberto Cavalli and Matthew Williamson it was never really dead anyway).

An ad for the new Zara collection, featuring a flower print dress that retails for a mere 150$. Zara are not the only chain store with a boho inspired collection, though. H&M will also sell somewhat bohemian clothes.

She's got the blues

You go to your closet and you select out, oh I don't know, that lumpy blue sweater, for instance, because you're trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back. But what you don't know is that that sweater is not just blue, it's not turquoise, it's not lapis, it's actually cerulean. You're also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar De La Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves St Laurent, wasn't it, who showed cerulean military jackets? And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of 8 different designers. Then it filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic casual corner where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs and so it's sort of comical how you think that you've made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you're wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room. From a pile of stuff."

Who doesn't know the infamous, tongue in cheek quote from The Devil Wears Prada? It is ever so true as shown on the NYC runways this week. There hardly was a collection that didn't feature at least one blue piece, ranging from very light baby blue to electric blue to midnight blue.

I always knew the Olsens had a certain impact on fashion, but I never would have thought that she was a real inspiration to designers, at least not by these means:

Personally, I'm not too fond of this trend, but maybe it will eventually grow on me, just like it was the case with Wayfarers a year or so ago. Until now, I only see a striking similarity to Meg Ryan in Mary-Kate which is not exactly desirable in my book.

Hibernation from fashion

Unpleasant weather, icy winds, not enough sunlight to brighten your day, constantly cold limbs and temperatures that force you to dress for the purpose of staying warm rather than for fashion - sometimes all you really want is to snuggle up in a soft blanket, have a hot drink and grab a good book.
These are the essentials for a cozy afternoon:

1. Light a candle

Whoever said romance was dead certainly either a) unintentionally started a fire with an unattended candle, b) was sexually unsatisfied or c) did just not know about Diptyque.

(Something for the brain: Diptyque is a Paris based company that was founded in 1961 and originally manufactured printed fabrics. In 1963, they introduced their first line of candles which from then on became their main focus.)

2. Sweet tooth
I have no talent for cooking or baking at all, but the Red wine chocolate cake is not only delicious but also quite easy to make.

You'll need:
250 gram butter
200 gram sugar
1 sachet vanilla sugar
1 dash of salt
4 eggs
1/8 liter red wine
250 gram flour
1 sachet baking soda
200g chocolate splinters
1 tsp. cocoa powder
1 tsp. cinnamon

Bake for 65 minutes at 170°C and apply powdered sugar.

Preview: Vogue UK March 2008

The biggest March issue in the history of Vogue UK will hit the newsstand on February 4th (right in time to get inspiration for Valentine's presents), offering 430 pages in total minus 282 pages of ads (I'd almost be more excited for that than for the actual content - if I were in the UK, that is) - that's 148 pages full of spring ready content.
The cover features Kate Moss in a Dolce & Gabbana dress photographed by Craig McDean who also shot her March 2006 cover.
As for me, I'm not sure whether time has finally caught up with Kate or it is just the quality that leaves a lot to be desired. The colours are indeed lovely, but Kate's expression seems so lifeless to me and the hair does not really help in making her look fresher either.

I am really hoping for the inside editorial to positively surprise me now.

My Blueberry Nights

Out of all upcoming movies, My Blueberry Nights is probably the one I'm looking forward to the most. Not only because of the star-studded cast (acting newcomer Norah Jones and 'Mathilda' Natalie Portman play among screen star Jude Law and Rachel Weisz), but also because of the wonderful and atmospheric settings (a café in Memphis, Tennessee).

Another thing I've noticed is the somewhat quirky yet really bubbly and positively unique style of Leslie, played by Natalie Portman, which appeals to me a lot. Who would have thought that a short, blonde perm with visible roots could look that good?

It's a man's world (this season, at least)

I can't believe I had overlooked the ingeniousness that is German AMICA magazine until today when I bought it for the first (or was it second?) time, mainly due to the fact that it had the beautiful Claudia Schiffer on the cover. Inside were some of the most amazing editorials I've seen in a German magazine for quite a long time, including one featuring menswear inspired clothes.

While the whole editorial is really inspiring to me, these three shots shown here really wowed me and will be pinned into my inspiration folder to help me form my spring/summer wardrobe, among others.

Cardigans and blazers have been a staple in my wardrobe for quite some time now, but the way they were styled in the editorial, along with the wonderful make-up and hair on the model, really made me rethink the way I can integrate them into my outfits.

By the way, while there are mainly unknown models in the editorials, there is also one that features one of the tops - Cintia Dicker! Amazing.

Homemade beauty

I'm aware that there are much more superior things going on in the fashion world this week, but I'm going to put those aside for now and turn to something I rarely write about instead. When I first started this blog, I had the topics "fashion, models, celebrities and beauty" in mind and so far, I've mostly covered the former two and completely neglected the latter.

I'm usually pretty wild about anything make-up or skincare - in fact, I'm obsessed with my skin. I religiously exfoliate, moisturise and apply sunscreen for fear of premature aging. Gasp.
At the same time, I like to use products that are as natural as possible because all those unidentifiable ingredients scare me, to say the least. Below are some of my favourite homemade and almost completely natural remedies:

Apple cider vinegar toner
Mix one part ACV with two parts green or white tea and add a few drops of tea tree oil. Applied to the face at least once a day (it's usually at night for me), this toner will even out the skin tone and leave your skin glowing. The only downside is the funky smell, so you might want to add an essential oil of your choice.

Baking soda exfoliator
Mix some baking soda with your cleanser and carefully massage into skin, then rinse with warm water. This is much more gentle than most regular exfoliators and incredibly cheap.

Castor oil
This is amazing for promoting hair growth! After my hairdresser completely ruined my hair and cut my fringe much too short, I regularly applied castor oil to the roots of my hair, massaged it in and left it on over night. It could have been just my imagination, but my hair really grew out much faster than it would normally have.
Applied to your lashes at night (using either an old mascara brush or a cotton bud), it will make your lashes grow longer and thicker as well.

Salt & olive oil hand exfoliator
Mix some salt and olive oil and massage into your hands for a few minutes (be careful not to rub too much as the salt might scratch your skin), then rinse with warm water and moisturise.

Aspirin mask
Crush a few aspirin pills (I recommend using a mortar) and dissolve them in a few (!) drops of water, then mix with either honey or aloe vera gel. Apply to face, let it sit for 15-20 minutes, then wet your fingers to lightly exfoliate your face. Afterwards, rinse with warm water.
The salicylic acid in aspirin recudes the appearance of pimples and minimizes the pores while honey is antibacterial and has soothing abilities.

The death of spring

When I think of Lara Stone and Mariacarla Boscono, the word "fierce" is usually what comes to my mind first, but in this case it's "wonky" seeing their expressions, poses and the way their faces seem distorted. The Givenchy S/S 08 campaign by Inez Van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin is definitely not a masterpiece by any means.

The ads completely fail to showcase the clothes while Mariacarla and Lara are trying to "outfierce" eachother. The overall concept of placing mirrors in the background is somewhat overdone, but I do think that the ornaments are a nice touch and fit the collection.

The darkness I find to be a nice touch, although it seems to be more fitting for the F/W season. As much as love to wear black, I feel like in summer we need to see something brighter and happier.

90s Reloaded: Denim jackets

I have noticed a recent trend of people wearing their denim jackets again - both on the streets and in the celebrity world. The one that intrigued me most was Rachel Bilson. I usually think denim jacket are pretty bad, right after Crocs, but the way she styled hers quite appeals to me.

The number one rule when wearing denim jackets is not to pair it with anything else denim, particularly jeans. There is nothing worse than an all over denim look, especially if the different denim washes clash.

In my opinion, denim jackets tend to look best when there is a breach of style involved, ie. frilly dresses or something very 'couture'.

Something(s) spring

I'm (aw)fully aware of the fact that it's only January, but I'm already looking forward to spring and planning my wardrobe. I'm incredibly excited to finally ring in the ballet flat season and bring out my lighter tops again, but since it's only about 10°C here I'm afraid I'll have to delay that plan. Anyway, here's what I want for spring:

1. Something basic
I've been meaning to pay a visit to the only American Apparel store in this region and get one of their infamous deep v-neck t-shirts for so long, but I've never got around to actually do so. Hence, one of my resolutions is to finally overcome myself and go there, regardless of my fear of stumbling into a crowd of hipsters. As far as colours are concerned, I've been considering asphalt and raspberry.

2. Something lacy
A little cheating since I've already ordered my pieces of desire - namely this tee and this dress from H&M - and they're soon to arrive. Or maybe even waiting for me at the post office as today I found a delivery note in the letter box. Might be for me. Or just another parcel from Amazon for my father.
(This just made me realise I don't own a leather jacket to accompany my dress. Oh well... My little navy blazer will do just as well.)

3. Something silk
After having missed the opportunity to acquire a scarf of sale at Zara and not having found anything really impressive in my mum's closet, I decided I may have to go thrift shopping. Believe it or not, it would be my first time. Until now, I have been ... let's call it not so comfortable with the idea of wearing something that has been worn by an anonymous someone before, but I'll have to overcome my fear for the sake of fashion.

4. Something short
The time for me to jump on the high-waisted bandwagon has finally come. I will no longer shy away from high-waisted skirt, heck, I'll even embrace them! My black jersey skirt will work perfectly a few inches higher.

5. Something protecting (and effortlessly cool)
Sunglasses - the biggest obstacle. I've been wearing glasses since I was about eight, but this year I finally want to try (and hopefully regularly wear) contacts. Not only because of fashion reasons, obviously (still, have you tried finding decent looking sunglasses that can be changed for the shortsighted? No curved or too big glasses allowed.), but also because I rarely wear my recent sunglasses since they look incredibly stupid on me and I have probably exposed my eyes to more than enough damaging sun rays. In short, I want contacts and finally a nice pair of sunglasses, most probably aviators.

Doing things in a big way

Recently, I have been quite fond of the idea of having lots of great, high-quality basics (I just discovered the label COS by H&M that offers slightly more expensive but better quality basics with sometimes avantgardistic cuts) that can easily be dressed up with jewelry and other accessories such as colourful scarves (Pucci and Missoni, anyone?). For now, though, I want to talk about jewelry.

I quite like the Olsen way of combining lots of different rings and bangles that add a very personal and extraordinary touch to every outfit, but with that (especially in regard to Mary-Kate) the question "How much is too much?" comes to mind.

I, for one, have been on a quest to find the right dose of jewelry for myself, but can't say that I've been very successful yet. The span goes from "minimalistic" (aka boring or generic) to old rich lady and while the former is not really what I'm going for but still acceptable, the latter must be avoided at all costs.

What do you, my readers, think is adequate in terms of amounts? Is this look for you?

Spring 2008 - Runway to Editorial

Ever since I first saw the collection consisting of denim dresses, chaps and hideous stars and stripes prints, I wondered what Monsieur Lagerfeld wanted to express. A praise to patriotism? The fact that he's secretly stuck in the 90s? Or did he just like the colours? Anyway, I may be biased since Daria is my very favourite model, but she honestly makes that pretty hideous ensemble look divine, although I still can't help but be reminded of circuses.

Taking that the average Prada costumer is probably 40-55 years old, this collection seemed a little let's say far fetched to me. I can't deny, though, that I'm very intrigued by the fairytale-ness of this.

I must admit I have some serious secret adoration for that dress and admire Nicolas Ghesquière for coming up with the idea of a flowered armor, but granted, it is incredibly unflattering and not really integrable into everyday life (as demonstrated by Jennifer Connelly).

A flare pant in the times of skinny jeans is albeit odd very refreshing, but I definitely can't see this catching on (neither can I see batik in the shops for that matter, at least we'll be spared).

Carefree sophistication

Lately, I have been drawn to classic and clean, almost preppy, styles that instantly add a mature and sophisticated vibe to the wearer. Think Ralph Lauren mixed with some Chanel (tweed jackets), a bead of pearls, a big watch/chronograph, dressy shirts and blazers.

Ashley Olsen perfectionates that style, in my opinion. She has a good mix of classic with a twist and a rock-ish vibe.

Granted, this style can easily drift towards "St. Tropez trop" or millionaire's wife, but only when there is too much gold or logo involved.

Sales insanity

It's the time of the year again (quite ironic actually since the year just started) that us fashion addicts have their minds set on shopping 24/7, that we can't fall asleep because of sheer excitement, that our hearts beat faster when we think of clothing, that our legs almost can't carry us fast enough, that some of us even lose control and their least bit of sanity when they are confronted with someone who desires the same thing - yes, it's sale time!

I must admit I bear all those patterns of behaviour around this time of the year (well, actually it's twice a year - if you don't count mid-season sales, that is), beginning with not being able to fall asleep up to the fear of missing something, and as I had to experience today, a lot of other women are exactly the same. I really couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the insanity that was the Zara sale: clothes everywhere, big messes on the ground and on the tables, people tearing things away from under others hands, queues in the fitting rooms, queues in front of the cash desk - and all that at 12 o'clock!

I was lucky enough to score a pair of adorable flats for no more than 15€ and a basic sweater as well as a cashmere vest. I honestly wasn't too fond of the selection they had - lots of basic tees, dressy black pants etc. -, although I would have bought almost all the shoes within a second, if they were my size and I had the money (I'm cheap...), that is.

Sometimes the insanity and worship that come with fashion really scare me (I, for one, certainly wouldn't have wanted to be at the Roberto Cavalli for H&M releases).

Stella's bunny

I am almost ashamed to say that I am little bit late on this, but it was just too funky, in a way, not to post. As you might have heard, Stella McCartney is doing a line for LeSportsac consisting of "user-friendly, yet attractive" bags that "compliment your personality and lifestyle".

Since the emphasis of this collection is on functionality, I was surprised to discover this little bunny bag pictured on the right. It seems like Stella put her quest of creating tough and sporty bags aside and drifted towards a more playful facet. After all, Stella is about to give birth to her third child and has motherhood on her brain (all bags also contain compartments for baby wipes). I, for one, could rather picture this adorable bunny bag on a toddler's or child's hand than over the shoulder of a grown fashionista.

One to watch: Signe Trans Jensen

Today I want to introduce you to Signe Trans Jensen, a 17-year old newcomer model from Jutland, Denmark who was a finalist in the Danish Elite Model Look Contest 2006. She is another example of the beautiful nordics who never cease to amaze me (see Siri, Suvi, Caroline, Mona etc.) and although she does remind me of a certain Latvian (a little clue: her name starts with an I), she has her very own look and appeal. Wonderful large eyes, a lovely profile, a strong bone structure - and that was just her face! May I add that she's 5'10" and has the ideal measurements for high fashion without looking unhealthily skinny.

So far, the highlight of her 'career' has been walking in Barcelona Fashion Week SS 08 for Thierry Mugler (!), Juan Pedro Lopez and Teresa Helbig among others. She was also featured in editorials in several Danish magazines.

Signe is currently signed with Elite Copenhagen (her mother agency) and Elite Italia and España, but it seems like she doesn't get enough support from her agency for being such a promising face. Please, Elite, push her a little more!

In the meantime, I am just going to be thrilled when discovering new gorgeous editorials and test shoots with her and root for her to have a big runway season in FW 07/08. This leaves not more than the obligatory "I have a feeling she's going to be big" to say, except for maybe that I have no idea how it was possible for her not to win the Elite Model Look Contest.

As you might have noticed, I am very much into bows, mostly in the form of headbands, and I was thrilled to discover the work of Alexis Mabille. His creations are a re-interpretation of the old-fashioned tie, modern dandy, classic with a twist for both men and women.

Alexis Mabille who previously worked for the big fashion houses Nina Ricci, Dior and Ungaro, uses exclusively vintage fabrics won on auctions for his ties and bows. That way, you are guaranteed to receive a rare and unique piece.

Carolina Herrera
Eternally chic, feminine and in more muted colours - there is no question this collection is for the very mature and settled costumer.

Zac Posen
I usually can't be called a fan of slightly conceited and friendly-with-every-celebrity-there-is Zac Posen's overpriced designs, but this collection I love. The eggplant satin is just gorgeous and so are the high waists and the mermaid dress.

Objects of drool: Camilla Skovgaard shoes

Today I came across the website of Camilla Skovgaard, a relatively new and unknown shoe designer from Denmark who is already tipped as the next Manolo Blahnik. With good reason, I must say. Her creations are extremely drool-worthy, some are made of python or eel leather in lush colours while others are just the right height and shape for an everyday shoe.
Camilla Skovgaard's shoes look exactly like something you would see on Carine Roitfeld, her daughter Julia or any other ultra-chic Vogue Paris femme. They are elegant yet edgy and seem to belong on an independent and cosmopolitan woman's feet.

My personal favourite. The colour is so incredibly rich and electric and its shape is quite gorgeous as well.

The shapes are quite reminiscent of Alaia's and that's probably what I like so much about them.

Haute Couture influences galore! These look like they belong on the runways of Givenchy and Balenciaga.

H&M Spring/Summer 2008

The first previews of the new H&M Spring/Summer 2008 collection are out and with it comes the question which designers they were (not in a Zara way, of course) inspired by this time.

Do I spot some Miu Miu/Chloé influences on the shoes and some Prada-esque satin there?

The bibs, the buttons, the muted colours, the high waists - all quite Chloé S/S 07.

Judging by the the prints, this seems to be part of their H&M x Marimekko collection. It's pretty, but I cannot help but think that those turbans are quite characteristic of Prada F/W 07/08 and also of Hermès S/S 08.

As for the model, I think Romina Lanaro is a rather good choice - with her sharp features, she fits the sultan-esque style of the Marimekko clothes and gives the somewhat girly and soft Chloé-inspired part of the collection and edgier and more grown-up appeal.

Skirts S/S 08

A-Line: Flowy, summery, sophisticated or girly - a-line skirts are suitable for all ages and can be worn for almost any occasion. They sit either on the hips or in the waist and hit the knee or a bit above.

Iceskater: Their shape is similar to that of a-line skirts, but the difference is that they always sit in the waist, have mid-thigh length and are usually quite voluminous. Theylook wonderful with plain tees or romantic blouses that always, always must be tucked in.

Long: Floor-length bohemian skirts were quite big two years ago and already made their return in form of sleek and elegant evening attire this F/W season. For S/S 08 everything is allowed - from bohemian to romantic to dark and almost vampiric. Even mid calf length goes!

Mini: Quite frankly, the mini never really went out of fashion, but this year, it's just huge! Or rather quite miniature. Ultra minis as seen on the runways of Maison Martin Margiela (top right) and Miu Miu (bottom right) need quite a lot of confidence and looong legs.

Pencil: They are curve-hugging, strong and emancipated and the total opposite of flowy a-line shapes. This season, they come with smart little extras such as pockets and in flashy colours and prints to make them look less governess and more fun.

One to watch: Maxine Schiff

17-year-old Maxine Schiff from Germany only recently started out in the industry and, in her first season, already scored show cards for Paris and London where she walked for Giambattista Valli and Osmon Youzefzada.

Katy Rodriguez

Katy Rodriguez is the co-owner of the well-known vintage shop Ressurection and recently launched her first own runway collection in New York. Yes, the famous crowd that supported her on her debut (Arianna Phillips styled her line, Mark Seliger shot the pictures, Rachel Zoe wears it) might shine more than her actual designs, but still you cannot deny that with her extraordinary sense for all things vintage, she succeeded in giving her collection a very authentic "back in the day" vibe.

But this isn't the first time for her to be in the spotlight. It already happened in 2006 when three infamous starlets wore one of her designs and made everyone wonder what designer they were wearing.

Oh well, here comes yet another celebrity/chain store collaboration, although in this case it's more of a B to C-lister/second-class bag designer collaboration. Yes, I do watch The Hills, the reality show of which Lauren "L.C." Conrad is the star, but I don't really admire her for her personal style. This pairing is especially doubtable since Lauren has just recently introduced her own fashion line which seems to be both of questionable quality and lacking creativity.

Lauren herself said about the collection: “I love the bag (tote) because it holds so much and the leather is super soft. It is available in 3 colors. There’s also a clutch and a coin purse.”

This collection of bags doesn't exactly strike me as original or amazingly creative either, but rather trendy and overrated. The most obvious 'flaw' is the price, though. Paying 350$ for a mediocre tote is certainly not the most common thing do it, especially since her fans are mostly teens and most of them won't be able to afford something that overpriced. Not even the fact that Lauren herself has been seen carrying the tote can cover theis obvious mis-marketing.

Fur vests: The fur coats' little brothers

Although the little animal rights activist in me has to cry out loud in disgust at the thought of wearing fur, I can't deny that I would love to snuggle up to something like this on cold winter days and look luxurious without looking too old. Ah, fur vests are the fur coat's younger and more affordable brother, mainly worn by the generation under 30 and not antiquated at all. They were mainly featured on the Fall/Winter 07/08 runways, but have somehow also made their ways onto the Spring/Summer 08 runways (although I think it is completely decadent to wear fur in summer) and therefore transfer perfectly into spring. And yes, they are lovely (and better for your mind and budget) in fake fur too!

Fur vests love to be paired with youthful and colourful skirts or dresses and can also be worn at night.

It is well-known that Monsieur Lagerfeld not only designs wonderful couture, but also has a very sharp tongue (probably the sharpest among all designers). In fact, there is hardly anyone who could escape him.

So this is the long awaited issue of Nylon with what looks like Ashley Olsen but is in fact the other twin, Mary-Kate Olsen.
Ashley is my all time favourite twin, but everytime I've written MK off, a new great editorial of her appears and I'm in love again (just a little bit less than with Ashley, though). And that is exactly the case yet again (may I remind you of her lovely Harper's ed). She may look a lot like her sister, but the editorial clearly represents her own grunge-y style and unconventional fashion sense.

MKA Olsen, you stylish fashion midgets grown into tough business women, oh how I love thee!

Penélope & Mónica Cruz for MNG

Designer and chain store collaborations seem to be the new thing to attract customers, see Kate Moss for Topshop, Roberto Cavalli, Lagerfeld or Stella McCartney for H&M and, the Cruz's predecessor, Milla Jovovich for Mango. Yes, the price might be higher than usual, but you're buying "designer" after all (add an imaginary rolling eyes to this).

The most recent, but somewhat neglected collaboration outside the borders of Spain, is Penélope and her sister Mónica Cruz for Mango. They might not be known to you for their extraordinary feel for fashion or as style icons, but they are very popular in Spain making them the perfect candidates.

The collection is, in my opinion, not exactly convincing in terms of unique and creative designs and looks much better in the campaigns than in person or on the website (although Mango is known for lacking presentation skills). Still there are some pieces that I like:

Left: At 219$ (only available in the US, as it seems) it can't be made of real fur, but it's still sends off some kind of luxurious vibe. Right: Paired with the right outfit (thinking of long leather gloves, skinny jeans or a shift dress, high heels and a headband) , it would probably look really cute (219$).

As simple as they are, I really like both of these dresses. The red one (149$) looks very Spanish and carefree to me (think Flamenco dancer or Tequila commercial), while the black one (189$) is seems to enhance a woman's body and just looks lovely with all that lace.

One-pieces usually remind me of gymnastics or American Apparel (note that's not a bad thing at all), but this one looks effortlessly chic and grown-up (no longer available, unfortunately). The heels (149$) are one of three pairs of shoes in the collection and the only ones that I liked. They do have something of a (sad) clown attire about them, but they're nice nonetheless.

Juicy Couture
Don't you just love these? They look like two soccer moms going shopping while their spoiled children are at school and having zero carb lunch. I must admit, though, that I quite like those teeny tiny chihuahuas.

Zac Posen
Now how ridiculous is this? I don't think Zac Posen is that much of a designer or fashion icon as to make a doll of himself for people to buy and actually put in their house. He probably wish he were.

Lanvin
Out of all the designer dolls, these are the only ones that I actually and truly like and would buy (if only they weren't so pricey - going on eBay for 649$). They are dressed in Alber's actual designs and made of ceramics. How lovely they would look on my nightstand...

Chloé fragrance ads

So these are the new Chloé fragrance ads featuring Clémence Poésy, Anja Rubik and Chloë Sevigny.

I'm not very impressed, to be honest. I quite like Clémence's ad, but I'm afraid that's just because I like her as an actress. Still she looks better than the other two. I'm most disappointed with Anja's shot. I usually love her, but she looks just dumb in this shot. I don't like how she opens her mouth, her lifeless expression, the movement of her hair, the way her face reflects the light.
As for the composition - the bottle seems like a foreign body in front of the black/white shot since it doesn't blend in at all. And come on, a shot of their faces? Not very creative.

Wholesome appeal of McNeil

AS soon as the influential New York Times tags a model "the one to watch" and the same girl goes on to shine in 35 runway shows in Paris and Milan, she is definitely a star on the rise.

Seventeen-year-old Australian model Catherine McNeil has been already swept up in the uber model world after her first season on the fashion-show circuit.

Looking wholesome and romantic, Catherine has captured a new, more glamorous zeitgeist.

And it's unlike the wide-set-eyed alien look personified and made famous by the other Aussie cutie, Gemma Ward.

Catherine, who hails from the Queensland suburb of Logan, had aspirations to be a mechanic, but chances are she has made more money in three weeks than she would have from her aborted three-year apprenticeship.

"I didn't really like school, so I had plans to be a mechanic because I really love machines,'' the heavy metal-loving teen told me yesterday from New York.

"I started modelling when I won the 2003 Girlfriend Magazine Model Search while I was still at school.

"I lived between Brisbane and the Gold Coast and I came down to Sydney for Fashion Week and some advertising campaigns.''

At the start of 2006 Catherine decided to refocus her life and move to Sydney with the Chic model agency.

She appeared in campaigns for Zimmerman, Cue, Simona, Alannah Hill, Myer, Colorado and Myer as well as appearing in editorials for Vogue, Harper's and Madison.

"This January, I went with my grandmother to New York to meet with the agency, Next, and soon after I was flown to Paris to meet with (revered photographer) Mario Testino,'' Catherine said.
"I've been travelling so much my four-year-old sister thinks I live at the airport.''

Mario booked Catherine immediately for D&G and Hugo Boss campaigns and put her under a six-month exclusive editorial contract.

It was then off to Milan, where she made her international catwalk debut to work runway shows for Roberto Cavalli, Etro, Pucci, Versace and Fendi before heading to Paris for Dior, Valentino, Stella McCartney, Christian Lacroix, Yves Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen, Chanel and Balenciaga.
Phew!

"It became a bit of blur doing so many shows, but if there was one designer I really liked wearing it was Stella McCartney,'' Catherine said.

Catherine was also the first model to appear on Riccardo Tisci's show for Givenchy, one of the Paris season's hottest tickets.

"I live for that girl,'' boasted Lauren Goodman, the fashion director of Conde Nast's Domino magazine, a sentiment embraced by Brana Wolf of US Harper's Bazaar.

"She's so different from the Russians,'' Ms Wolf told the New York Times.

"She's tall, for one thing, and at the moment there's a tall-girl trend, and Ms McNeil also walks well,'' Ms Wolf added.

Just watch out for more of Our Catherine.
